Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish must be mixed exactly according to the manufacturer’s ratio. Incorrect mixing is the main reason varnish remains sticky or fails to harden.
Recommended Ratio: 3 Parts Varnish (Part A) : 1 Part Hardener (Part B)
After mixing, allow the mixture to stand for 5–10 minutes (induction time) before application. Only mix what you can use within the pot life.
Use Two Pack PU Thinner for thinning. Do not over-thin as it reduces gloss level and durability.
Thinning Guidelines (Very Important)
Correct thinning is essential to ensure proper penetration into timber and to prevent soft or sticky floors.
- First coat (sealer coat): Thin approximately 20% with Two Pack PU Thinner to allow the varnish to penetrate the wood.
- Second and third coats: Thin approximately 10% with Two Pack PU Thinner.
Applying unthinned varnish on the first coat seals the surface instead of penetrating the wood. This can trap solvent and cause peeling, whitening, bubbling, or a permanently soft parquet floor.
Surface Preparation
- Surface must be clean, dry and free from oil, wax and grease
- Sand using P120–P220 sandpaper
- Remove dust completely using a dry cloth or air blower
- Previously coated surfaces must be lightly sanded to create a bonding key
Poor preparation causes peeling, bubbling, whitening or loss of gloss.
Application Method
- Brush
- Mohair Roller
- Spray gun (recommended for best finish)
Recommended coats: 2–3 coats
Apply thin even coats. Thick coats may trap solvent and cause delayed drying or soft parquet floors.
Finish Selection Guide
- Gloss: Highest shine and highlights wood grain but shows scratches easily
- Satin: Most popular for Kenyan homes, balanced appearance and easier maintenance
- Matt: Modern low sheen look, hides scratches and dust better
Common Uses
- Parquet floors
- Wooden staircases
- Furniture finishing
- Doors & frames
- Cabinets & wardrobes

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct mixing ratio for Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish?
The correct mixing ratio is 3 parts varnish (Part A) to 1 part hardener (Part B) by volume. Follow this ratio exactly to ensure proper curing and a smooth finish.
How many coats of Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish should I apply?
Apply 2–3 coats depending on the surface absorption and desired finish. Parquet floors typically require 3 coats for optimal durability.
How long should I wait before using a newly varnished surface?
Light use is possible after 24 hours. Full curing and maximum hardness are achieved after 5–7 days.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be applied over old varnish?
Yes. The old varnish must be lightly sanded to create a proper bonding surface before applying new coats.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be spray applied?
Yes. Using a spray gun provides the smoothest and most uniform finish, especially on furniture and large wooden surfaces.
How should I thin Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish?
Use Two Pack PU Thinner. Thin the first coat approximately 20% for penetration, and subsequent coats about 10% to maintain gloss and durability.
Why is thinning important for Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish?
Correct thinning ensures the varnish penetrates the wood properly, prevents trapped solvent, and avoids peeling, bubbling, whitening, or soft floors.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be applied to doors, frames, and furniture?
Yes. It is suitable for doors, frames, furniture, parquet floors, staircases, cabinets, wardrobes, and other wooden surfaces.
What is the recommended drying time between coats?
The varnish is touch dry within 2–4 hours. Recoat after 8–12 hours. Light use is possible after 24 hours, and full curing occurs in 5–7 days.
How should I prepare the surface before applying Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish?
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, free from oil or wax, and sanded with P120–P220 sandpaper. Remove all dust completely before applying the varnish.
Is Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish suitable for humid areas such as bathrooms?
Yes. It can be applied to wooden surfaces in bathrooms, but the area should be well-ventilated and the substrate completely dry before application.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be used in high-traffic areas?
Yes. When applied with 2–3 coats and proper thinning, it provides durable protection for high-traffic floors and surfaces.
What is the pot life of Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish after mixing?
The pot life is approximately 2–3 hours at 25°C. Only mix what can be used within this period to prevent wastage or partial curing.
Can I use other thinners instead of the recommended Two Pack PU Thinner?
No. Using other solvents may prevent proper curing and damage the finish. Always use Two Pack PU Thinner for best results.
Does Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish come in different finishes?
Yes. It is available in Gloss, Satin, and Matt finishes. Choose a finish based on aesthetic preference and maintenance requirements.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be applied on untreated wood?
Yes. Untreated wood should be sanded and cleaned. Thin the first coat for proper penetration before applying subsequent coats.
How should I clean brushes and rollers after using Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish?
Clean immediately after use with Two Pack PU Thinner. Hardened varnish cannot be removed with water.
Can Crown Two Pack Polyurethane Varnish be used outdoors?
This varnish is primarily intended for interior wooden surfaces. For outdoor use, ensure surfaces are sheltered and protected from direct sunlight or rain during curing.
